TENNERTON — The Buckhannon-Upshur Band Boosters will be purchasing two new marching band Sousaphones after receiving a $11,318 grant from the Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund.
The Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund, which was established in 1948, has provided more than $270 million in grants through its formal giving program since its inception.
The Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund supports hundreds of organizations and programs in its local communities and supplies nonprofit organizations with funding, time, expertise and resources.
Buckhannon-Upshur Band Director Tyler Perske confirmed that the money collected from the fund would be used to update and add to the B-U marching bands’ brass section.
“One of the new Sousaphones will replace a damaged instrument, and the other will replace one on loan from West Virginia Wesleyan College,” Perske said. “These instruments are very expensive, so this purchase allows even more students to learn and play in our marching band.”

Several members of the B-UHS Band recently had the opportunity to participate in the Marshall University High School Honor Band. Those students were Estrid Garver-Daniels, Ethan Manspeaker, Parker McCann, Chris Powers and Scotty Woody.
The band members participating spent several days rehearsing and performing alongside other musicians from across the region under the direction of guest conductors and Marshall University music faculty.
