ELKINS — The Randolph County Board of Education unanimously accepted the resignation of Superintendent of Schools Dr. Shawn Dilly Friday evening.

After an executive session lasting more than 90 minutes during a special meeting Friday, all five Randolph County Board of Education members voted in favor of approving Dilly’s resignation “effective immediately.”

Board member Janie Newton attended the meeting via telephone.

Dilly was in attendance at the meeting, but did not join the board members in the executive session at 5:31 p.m., instead returning to his office.

He did not rejoin the board, or the meeting, when they returned from executive session at 7:01 p.m. and voted. BOE President Rachel Burns said no decisions were made during the executive session.

After the vote, BOE member Dr. Sherri Collett made a motion for the BOE to direct the board’s council to “provide the information discussed in executive session to the appropriate authorities.” The motion was approved by the board in a 5-0 vote.

Collett also made a motion to add an agenda item to its upcoming March 25 special meeting “for the possible appointment of an interim Superintendent of Schools.” The motion was approved by the board in a 5-0 vote.

Burns stated that the BOE will still have its special meetings regarding personnel and the RIF process on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

When asked for comment by The Inter-Mountain after the meeting adjourned, Burns and board member Dr. Phil Chua stated that they were told not to provide any comments “by counsel.”

An audience of about 10 people attended the special meeting Friday night. Some of the audience members seemed upset by the decision, with one person saying to departing BOE members “karma’s a b—h.”

Dilly was hired as the superintendent for Randolph County in March 2024.

Starting at $3.92/week.
