ELKINS — American Legion Post 29 will host its annual American Legion Birthday dinner at its headquarters on March 14.
Adam Greathouse, Past Department Commander of the Disabled American Veterans Department of West Virginia, will serve as the guest speaker at the dinner. Greathouse, who lives in Kenna, currently serves as the Fourth Junior Vice Commander.
Tickets for the dinner can be purchased at Post 29 in Elkins or by contacting Donnie Lambert at 304-621-0483. The menu for the dinner will consist of salad, ham, green beans, mashed potatoes, roll, dessert and a drink.
“This dinner is to celebrate the Elkins American Legion’s birthday, which was founded on March 15, 1919,” said Lambert , who is Post 29’s Americanism Officer. “We typically have about 100 people come out for the Birthday Dinner, but we’d like to try and get more people to come out. People can come out for a great meal and the camaraderie among those attending.”
Greathouse is a service-connected disabled veteran of the United State Army, enlisting and serving with the Third Infantry Division in Kosovo.
Greathouse fell into a two-month coma and sustained a traumatic brain injury after inhaling an unknown chemical substance while he was deployed. Greathouse’s lungs were also severely damaged by the chemical substance. After recovering at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, he was medically discharged from the Army.
Greathouse, who also serves as a spokesman and public service announcement ambassador for the Disabled American Veterans, has donated thousands of hours at his local Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
He was the adaptive sports ambassador for the National Disabled Veterans Sports Clinic and was the recipient of the DAV Freedom Award in 2017. He is the 2020 Disabled American Veteran of the Year.
“There could be people, especially veterans, who don’t know what the Disabled American Veterans do,” Lambert said. “Adam (Greathouse) is a shining example of what the DAV does. He won the Disabled Veteran of the Year six years ago, and has a great story and has said the DAV has helped him bounce back after his time in the military.”
