Man charged with multiple felony counts

Callahan

ELKINS — A man is facing multiple felony counts after being arrested in Randolph County.

Barry Paul Callahan Jr., 40, of Alkol, is charged with two counts of failure to register as a sex offender. He is being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $10,000 cash-only bond set by Magistrate Tracy M. Harper.

The criminal complaint, prepared by Cpl. S.P. Miller of the Elkins Detachment of the West Virginia State Police, states that on March 12, officers learned that Callahan, a “known and registered sex offender in Lincoln County,” was staying at the Randolph Village Apartments in Elkins.

Cpl. J. Ramey of the Hamlin Detachment of the WVSP informed Miller that Callahan “was supposed to be in a rehabilitation center,” the complaint states.

Officers spotted the vehicle Callahan was supposedly driving in the parking lot of the Randolph Village Apartments, the complaint states, and found Callahan “hiding under the bed” in an apartment. A witness told officers Callahan had been living in the apartment for several weeks “since he got out of a rehabilitation center in Parkersburg.”

The complaint states that Callahan’s suitcase was “packed with clothes” and contained “approximately four prescription bottles all bearing the defendant’s name.”

The witness allegedly told police that Callahan had, from time to time, helped the witness deliver food for Door Dash in the local area.

According to the complaint, Callahan “failed to notify the Hamlin Detachment in Lincoln County of his living arrangements, and failed to notify the Elkins Detachment within the 10 business days as permitted by law.”

Callahan “also has to register any vehicles he is either operating or owns, which he did not,” the complaint states.

Starting at $3.92/week.
