Randolph waiver is approved

Upshur, Tucker ‘snow day’ requests also OK’d

ELKINS — The Randolph County Board of Education has announced that it’s received confirmation from the state that a waiver request for five snow days was approved.

The announcement was made on a Randolph BOE social media page, also stating that the Randolph County School system would share an updated calendar soon.

A waiver request for snow days in West Virginia is a formal application submitted by a county school district to the West Virginia Department of Education to excuse missed instructional days without needing to make them up at the end of the school year. A snow day waiver request is typically used when extreme weather causes closures during a declared State of Emergency.

The waiver request submitted by Randolph County Schools was for the five days students were out of school during a January snowstorm –Jan. 26 through Jan. 30 — when Gov. Patrick Morrisey  declared a State of Emergency.

Dilly told the BOE at that meeting that if the waiver went through, students’ last day of school would likely be moved up from June 12 to June 5. He added that the last day for Randolph County Schools employees would be June 15.

Tucker County and Upshur County also announced on social media that they received confirmation from the state that their snow day waiver requests had been approved.

A social media post by Tucker County Schools from Thursday states, “We just received confirmation that our waiver request for two of our snow days in January has been granted. Students will now only have one makeup day this school year. Spring break will remain the same. Students’ last day will now be June 4th. If any further snow days occur, they will be added on after that date.”

On Friday afternoon, Upshur County Schools released a statement regarding its waiver request.

“Upshur County Schools has received approval from the WVDE State Superintendent for our snow day waiver request,” the social media post stated. “As a result, the district calendar remains the same, no makeup days are required at this time.

“We’ll continue to monitor weather conditions. If future inclement weather impacts the calendar, we will update families and staff immediately through our website, social media, and direct notifications. Thank you for your patience and support.”

Waiver requests for Monongahela, Preston and Taylor counties were also approved during the past two days.
