Upshur man charged with child neglect

BUCKHANNON — An Upshur County man is accused of testing positive for multiple drugs during a parole drug test with two children in his vehicle.

Curtis Lee Meahl, 35, is charged with gross child neglect, DUI-third offense, and having no interlock device. He was being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $31,500 bond, but has apparently paid the bond.

According to the criminal complaint, prepared by Corporal Tyler A. Gordon of the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office, on March 10, Meahl arrived to the Upshur County Probation office and, during the interaction, tested positive for methamphetamine, cocaine and fentanyl.

Meahl “displayed wide eyes with minimal blinking” and his “muscle tone was tight and rigid” and he “was sweating profusely,” the complaint states. “The defendant was unable to stand still, was unsteady on his feet, and could not follow simple directions.”

In his care and custody at the time, Meahl had two children in his vehicle, according to the complaint. “The defendant’s impairment and drug use while the above children were in his care and custody… created a substantial risk of serious bodily injury or death.”

It was determined that Meahl drove a vehicle “to the Upshur County Courthouse, while impaired by the above substances, and without an interlock system installed … as required by the DMV.”

Meahl has two previous convictions for DUI, in Harrison County in November 2019, and in Upshur County in June 2025, the complaint reads.
