Beverly man charged with DUI causing death

BEVERLY – A Beverly man has been charged with DUI causing death after a single-vehicle collision on the Georgetown Road on Tuesday evening.

Sidney Austen Brenwalt, 31, was taken into custody and is currently incarcerated in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $100,000 cash-only bond, set by Randolph County Magistrate Ben Shepler.

According to the criminal complaint, emergency personnel were called to the scene of the accident at approximately 3:30 p.m. and a passenger in the vehicle driven by Brenwalt was pronounced deceased at 3:53 p.m.

On Wednesday morning, Randolph County Sheriff Rob Elbon put out a statement regarding the fatality accident and the on-going investigation.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, the West Virginia State Police, the Elkins Fire Department, the Beverly Volunteer Fire Department and Randolph County EMS responded to a single-vehicle accident in the area of the 3400 block of Georgetown Road, the release states. The vehicle, a 2012 Ford Fiesta, had been traveling south on Georgetown Road.

The vehicle’s operator lost control and ran off the roadway on the right, the release states. The vehicle descended into a stream and struck a cement culvert, which caused the vehicle to flip onto its side.

A passenger was ejected from the vehicle as a result of the collision and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the West Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the release states. The driver, who was injured, was transported by Randolph County EMS.

“The collision is being investigated jointly by the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office and the West Virginia State Police,” Elbon wrote in the release. “Speed is believed to be a contributing factor and the investigation remains active. The Sheriff’s Office extends its condolences to the family of the deceased.”
