BUCKHANNON – A Randolph County woman is facing multiple charges, including possession of methamphetamine, after allegedly driving the wrong way on Route 33 and causing a collision, police said.
On Thursday afternoon, Upshur County Sheriff J. Michael Coffman issued a press release stating that a Beverly woman was involved in a wrong-way driver collision early Thursday morning.
At approximately 1:42 a.m. on Thursday, the Upshur County Communications Center received a call about a wrong-way driver and a collision on Route 33 near Buckhannon Mountain, the release states.
It was allegedly determined that Stephanie Sue May, 42, of Beverly, was operating a 2004 Black Saturn SRL in the eastbound lane of Route 33, however she had been heading westbound.

After May reportedly struck another vehicle, she continued to operate her vehicle for approximately 1.1 miles while only having three wheels, the release states. The vehicle came to a stop near the bottom of Buckhannon Mountain, where May allegedly exited her vehicle and attempted to get on the back of a motorcycle that had also been stopped at the bottom of the mountain.
May was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital by Upshur County EMS.
May allegedly admitted to using heroin prior to the collision, the release states. A glass pipe that contained a “white crystal-like residue” and burnt residue was reportedly recovered from the front pocket of May’s flannel shirt.
May is being charged with DUI causing serious bodily injury, leaving the scene with serious bodily injury, reckless driving and possession of a controlled substance methamphetamine, according to the Upshur County Sheriff Office. May is currently being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail.
