Healthy Kids Day at YMCA set
ELKINS – A free, family-friendly annual event will give families the opportunity to promote healthy living, active play and strong minds on Saturday.
The Elkins YMCA will host its annual Healthy Kids Day from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. The free event is open to elementary-aged students and their families.
Local coaches, athletes and community members will lead a variety of structured activity sessions and open-play opportunities during the event.
Among the activities will be an indoor wiffle ball play session with the Elkins High School softball team from noon to 1 p.m., followed by a basketball skills clinic with Elkins High School coach Amrit Rayfield from 1 to 2 p.m.
A “Mommy and Me” yoga session for mothers and children ages 4 to 7 will be offered from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m., led by instructor Sarah Craig.
From 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., members of the YMCA’s adult co-ed volleyball league will provide a youth volleyball skills session to introduce basic fundamentals and build excitement for the sport to younger ages.
Also featured will be an “open family swim” from 2 to 4 p.m. at the facility’s pool, and access to the YMCA’s Imagination Playground from 2:30 to 4 p.m., where children can participate in creative free play in the gymnastics space. Adult supervision is required for all open-play areas.
Also during the afternoon, a number of community organizations will be present from noon to 3 p.m., offering resources and hands-on activities.
Participating partners will include the Eyes and Brains STEM Center, which will host a robot hand craft, and the Elkins/Randolph County Public Library, which will provide information on its “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” program and lead a sensory bracelet activity.
All activities are free to attend. Participants in athletic sessions are asked to wear clean indoor athletic shoes.
Local businesses and organizations interested in hosting a table or activity during the event are encouraged to contact YMCA Program Director Nic Casey at nic@elkinsymca.com.
Healthy Kids Day is part of the YMCA’s national initiative to improve the health and well-being of children and families.
