Man charged with access device fraud

ELKINS – A 48-year-old man was taken into custody after police say he used someone else’s credit card and attempted to make other transactions around Randolph County.

Jerry Ray Helmick was charged with the felony offense of fraud with an access device and is currently incarcerated in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $500 cash-only bond set by Randolph County Magistrate Mike Dyer.

According to a press release from Randolph County Sheriff Rob Elbon, the RCSO received a 911 call on April 13 regarding fraud. The alleged victim told 911 that she had traveled through the Elkins area on Sunday and that she received an alert that her card was used for a $10.46 purchase at the Go-Mart store on the Beverly Five Lane.

The release states that transactions on the alleged victim’s credit card were made at an ATM and at the Elkins WalMart store. After turning off the credit card, the alleged victim was speaking with the Sheriff’s Office when she received an alert that another attempt was made on her card at the Busy Beaver store on the Beverly Five Lane.

According to the release, a deputy sheriff was in the area of the Busy Beaver and once on the scene was able to determine that the individual using the card, who was identified as Helmick, left the store on a bicycle. Deputies were able to locate Helmick on the Country Club Road with the card in his possession.

The release states that Helmick told police that he found the card adjacent to the Beverly Five Lane and that he admitted to using and attempting to use the card without authorization.He was arraigned in Randolph County Magistrate Court.
