Agencies respond to false shooter call at ERCC
ELKINS — Multiple law enforcement and first responder agencies from in and out of Randolph County responded to a false active shooter report at Elkins Rehabilitation and Care Center (ERCC) Sunday night, officials state.
On Sunday at 10:53 p.m., Randolph County Sheriff Rob Elbon released a statement regarding a false active shooter call that was made that night at ERCC on the Beverly Five-lane.
According to the release, around 9:24 p.m. on Sunday, Randolph County 911 received a call of a active shooter situation at ERCC. The caller advised that one patient was shot and nurses were “guarding the door.” The shooter was described by the caller as a “tall, slender male.”
Fourteen law enforcement units responded to the scene within three to four minutes of the call, according to Elbon’s statement, with off-duty Sheriff’s Office Deputies, West Virginia State Troopers and Elkins City Police units activated. Randolph County EMS and multiple fire department units were staged off sight for mass casualty assignments if needed, until law enforcement cleared the scene. Elbon writes that law enforcement officers entered the building and “cleared the facility within a few minutes.”
Units went to the room where the call originated and, according to the release, at 9:29 p.m. it determined there was “no threat.” Elbon wrote that the call to 911 had been made by a resident of the ERCC facility.
“Thank God this was not a real active shooter situation,” Elbon wrote in his release Sunday night. “It’s a blessing to work with such professional first responders.”
Sheriff’s Office units from Upshur County, as well as out-of-county State Police and city police units who were en-route way to help, were advised to stand down, according to the release. Elbon gave special thanks to all units who responded or were on their way to the scene.
“I would like to commend the Randolph 911 Center for their great work during this critical call situation,” Elbon said in his statement. “Special thanks to Randolph County EMS, Elkins Fire Department, WV State Police, Elkins Police Department, WV Natural Resources Police, Upshur County Sheriff’s Office and Randolph County Sheriff’s office Deputies who responded or were responding to the scene.”
