BOE set to hire new superintendent

ELKINS – The Randolph County Board of Education is scheduled on Tuesday to hire a new Superintendent of Randolph County Schools during a special meeting at the Central Office.

The Randolph BOE went into executive session during another special meeting on Thursday to conduct interviews with screened applicants for the superintendent position. Terry George was appointed interim superintendent of Randolph County Schools on March 21, just one day after Superintendent Dr. Shawn Dilly resigned. Dilly was hired as Superintendent of Randolph County Schools in March 2024.

George previously served as the superintendent of Randolph County Schools and has now been the school system’s interim superintendent three times. He also served as the superintendent of schools in Fayette County and interim superintendent of schools in Nicholas County.

In April, the Randolph County BOE approved a contract with the West Virginia School Board Association that allowed the WVSBA to conduct a structured, customized search for Randolph County’s next superintendent. Howard O’Cull, WVSBA Executive Director, took part in Thursday’s special meeting.

The Randolph County Board of Education will also hear from three entities wanting to obtain the Harman K-12 school building, which will become empty when school concludes at the end of the school year in June.

“The Harman property, we have been working with the legal team and at the meeting on the 26th (May), we have invited three entities to come in and provide oral presentations,” George said. “Two have accepted and one is simply going to send in a written presentation. So we will do that and we have given them 10 minutes for the oral presentation and then they can submit the written application to you as a board.”

George said selecting an entity for the property could be an agenda item for the Board of Education’s next regular meeting on June 2. The Harman Town Council and Harman Education Association have both publicly shown interest in the building and both have plans in place to use the facility for some type of school.

The West Virginia Board of Education approved the Randolph County Board of Education’s recommendation to close two of the county’s schools last year, which were the Harman K-12 School and North Elementary School. The Randolph BOE plans to auction off the North Elementary property.

The special meeting for Tuesday is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Randolph County Schools Central Office.

Starting at $3.92/week.
