ELKINS – Randolph County will elect a new County Commissioner in November, as incumbent Chris See was beaten in his re-election attempt Tuesday night by Steve Wamsley, who will be the Democratic nominee heading into the General Election.
On the Republican side of Tuesday’s Primary Election, Russ Collett edged out Joseph Owens by just 10 votes, 860 votes to 850, according to preliminary election results, to be the GOP nominee for the Randolph County Commission seat.
At the Randolph County Courthouse Tuesday night, Wamsley told The Inter-Mountain he was “very happy” with the results. When asked how he felt about going up against the Republican candidate in the General Election, Wamsley spoke highly of both possible opponents.
“I look forward to it,” Wamsley said. “Both of the guys in the Republican Party that are running are really nice people. I’ve known both of them for a long time. So, one thing I can be sure of is that Randolph County is going to get a good person to fill that seat.”
Wamsley tallied 1,188 votes Tuesday evening, or 61.17% of the vote. See garnered 754 votes, or 38.83%.
See has served as a county commissioner for more than 15 years. He was re-elected for a third term in 2020. See was not present at the courthouse Tuesday night.
Among Republican voters, Collett’s 860 votes accounted for 50.29% of those cast, while Owens’ 850 totaled 49.71% of the vote.
Collett left the Randolph County Courthouse just after the final results were announced Tuesday night and could not be reached for comment by press time.
