Thompson to be WVWC Commencement speaker

BUCKHANNON – A renowned American jazz pianist, composer and arranger based in West Virginia, whoe music career has spanned more than 50 years, will be the 2026 Commencement speaker for West Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday.
Internationally acclaimed jazz artist Bob Thompson will not only serve as the Commencement speaker but will also be awarded one of the institution’s highest honors, the President’s Medal.
Known for his distinctive sound, improvisational mastery, and cross-genre explorations, Thompson has “influenced generations of musicians while remaining deeply engaged in education and community-based arts initiatives,” a WVWC release states.
“Thompson is synonymous with jazz in West Virginia and serves as the unofficial jazz ambassador of the Mountain State,” the release reads. Since 1991, he has been heard performing live on West Virginia Public Radio’s critically acclaimed and nationally syndicated show “Mountain Stage,” and has performed nationally and internationally. In 2015, Thompson was inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame.
“Bob Thompson represents the very best of what we hope our graduates carry into the world,” WVWC President James Moore said. “His life’s work reflects discipline, creativity, resilience, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. He has not only shaped the sound of modern jazz but also the lives of countless young artists. We are honored to welcome him to campus and recognize his extraordinary contributions.”
The President’s Medal is awarded to individuals whose achievements embody the mission and values of West Virginia Wesleyan College and whose work has made a lasting impact on society. Thompson’s influence extends beyond the stage, with a legacy of mentorship, collaboration, and advocacy for the arts that aligns closely with the College’s commitment to developing thoughtful, engaged leaders, the release states.
Thompson will address graduates during the College’s Commencement ceremony on Saturday,offering reflections drawn from his distinguished career and insights into the role of passion, perseverance and purpose in shaping a meaningful life.
