Tygarts Valley Conservation District hosting hay class

PHILIPPI – The Tygarts Valley Conservation District Office will host a hay techniques, testing, and discussion class on Tuesday at the organization’s main office.

The session, which will begin at 6 p.m., will be presented by Gene Hovatter from Higher Knowledge Farms in Moatsville and will cover clear and simple steps that can make hay work easier and more efficient.

The instructional class will be useful for beginners as well as those who have been making hay for years. Topics that will be covered include basic bale size, shape, and moisture content.

There will also be a discussion on time-cutting methods, tools and purposes, and why fast drying matters. Useful tips on raking, baler speed, bale quality, and storage options will also be a focal point and there will be guidance on when it makes sense to make hay or when to buy it.

Feeding needs for cattle at different stages will be explained during the session and the instructor will go over how to plan daily feed and winter totals, as well as simple ways to cut hay waste.

Hay testing will be discussed and those in attendance will learn how to get a good sample and why a small test can prevent problems. Attendees will learn what to look for in hay, such as smell, color, leafiness and species.

The Tygarts Valley Conservation District Office has its own educational programs and also participates in statewide programs through the West Virginia Conservation Agency.

The mission of the WVCA is to provide for and promote the protection and conservation of West Virginia’s soil, land, water and related resources for the health, safety and general welfare of the state’s citizens.

The Tygarts Valley Conservation District Office’s goal is to help local producers make better choices and feel more confident. Those attending the class will be able to take part in an open discussion and refreshments will be available.

To RSVP for the session, call the Tygarts Valley Conservation District at 304-457-3026 or go to the organization’s Facebook page’s event listing and click “going.” The class is free and anyone can attend.
