ELKINS — The Emma Scott Garden Club is currently seeking additional names to be added to the Rosie the Riveter Statue that is located in the All-Veterans Memorial Park in downtown Elkins.

The 6-foot, 3-inch statue, which was placed in the park in July of last year, is the first of its kind in the United States that was created by a garden club. It is just one of four other Rosie statues in the entire United States.

The base of the statue currently has names of Rosies from across West Virginia. The Emma Scott Garden Club has a list of names ready to be added and is seeking more to be placed on the base.

The list of Rosies that will be added include Daisy Ruth Foreman-Cochran, Edna Squire Hayes, Olive “June” Woolwine Hyson, Mazie Emogene Preast-Mullins, Rachel Pingley, Dorothy Thiem Starks, Ruth Madeline Taylor-Manning, Pauline Futral Ware, Gwendolyn Irene Ward, Phoebe J. Weese, Mary Stankus Williams, Ethel Mouse Woolwine and Eileen Woolwine Conway Young.

The Emma Scott Garden Club will honor the added Rosies to the statue as part of America’s 250th Birthday.

“We are wanting to add as many names to the Rosie statue base as we can,” said Emma Scott Garden Club member Linda Shomo.”This effort will help preserve a critical piece of our local and national history and ensure future generations recognize the contributions of these remarkable women.”

Rosie the Riveter is a cultural icon that represents the women who worked in factories and shipyards during the war. Any woman who received pay for any essential work during war is considered a Rosie.

The All-Veterans Memorial Park is located on the corner of Railroad Avenue and Harrison Avenue. The Rosie the Riveter Statue, which faces Harrison Avenue, was made possible by funds raised by the Emma Scott Garden Club. The statue is situated behind the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument and was designed in Provo, Utah with a price tag of $67,000.

For more information or to get a name added to the Rosie Statue, contact Shomo at ace99900@aol.com or 703-861-9351.

Starting at $3.92/week.
