Man faces felonies in cattle prod incident

EVERSON

BELINGTON — A Barbour County man faces felony charges after alleged chasing a woman through the woods with a cattle prod and threatening police.

Kenneth Bernard Everson, 53, is charged with one count of domestic assault third offense and one count of threats of a terrorist act, both felonies. He is currently being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on $20,000 cash-only bond.

According to the criminal complaint filed by Deputy C. Curkendall with the Barbour County Sheriff’s Office, on June 28, Curkendall and other deputies with the department responded to a reported domestic violence incident at a residence on Mouse Run Road in Belington.

Barbour County Communications advised the officers that a female caller reported that she was hiding in the woods near the residence because Everson was allegedly actively searching for her on a side-by-side ATV. Communications then lost contact with the alleged victim and officers responded quickly due to concerns for her safety.

Upon arrival, deputies heard noises and movement coming from inside the residence, the complaint states. Deputies made entry into the residence due to the “exigent circumstances” surrounding the unknown whereabouts of the alleged victim and Everson. Upon entry, deputies were reportedly attacked by a dog that was then subsequently “neutralized.” The alleged victim and Everson were not found in the residence. The alleged victim called 911 a short time later to confirm that she was safe after arriving at a neighbor’s home.

While deputies were searching the surrounding area, Corporal J. Mayle encountered Everson walking through the wooded area near the residence, the complaint states. Everson was allegedly carrying a cattle prod and “appeared to be searching the area where the (alleged) victim had fled.” Mayle took Everson into custody without further incident. After being advise that his dog had been shot after attacking deputies, Everson allegedly stated that he would “‘kill us next time we show up,’ referring to law enforcement officers.”

Chief Deputy R. Hymes transported the alleged victim to the Barbour County Sheriff’s Office where she provided a recorded statement, the complaint states. The alleged victim reportedly stated that she and Everson became involved in an argument and that she fled into the wood because she “feared Everson was going to physically assault her. She advised that, if Everson had found her, she believed he would beat her. During her 911 call, the alleged victim reportedly stated Everson threw concrete blocks at her while she ran from him.

According to the complaint, Deputy/Task Force Officer D.A. Cole conducted a criminal history inquiry on Everson. The inquiry allegedly revealed that Everson has prior convictions for domestic battery from November 2020 and Feb. 2026, as well as stalking charges from July 2022 and Sept. 2023.
