Upshur Commissioner receives honor

CHARLESTON — Upshur County Commissioner Kristie Tenney has been named as one of the recipients of the 2026 Governor’s Mountaineer Spirit Award, officials announced.
The County Commissioners’ Association of West Virginia (CCAWV) announced in a press release on Thursday that Tenney had been selected as a recipient of the 2026 Governor’s Mountaineer Spirit Award for her work in encouraging communities statewide to participate in the Mountaineer Mile.
According to the CCAWV, this award is presented through Volunteer West Virginia as part of the annual Governor’s Service awards, which recognize “outstanding volunteerism and community service across the Mountain State.” Beginning in 1995, the Governor’s Service Awards celebrate individuals, organizations, businesses and groups whose “dedication to serving others has strengthened communities throughout West Virginia.”
Award recipients will be honored during a special ceremony on Aug. 6, at the Culture Center in Charleston.
An Upshur County native, Tenney has served as Upshur County’s District Three Commissioner since 2019. The CCAWV says Tenney become “widely recognized” for her leadership and enthusiasm in promoting healthy lifestyles, community involvement and civic engagement through the Mountaineer Mile initiative. Her efforts are said to have inspired thousands of West Virginians to come together in support of physical activity, wellness and community connection.
“Kristie Tenney exemplifies the very best of county government leadership through her dedication to public service both inside and outside the commission chambers,” Executive Director of the County Commissioners’ Association of West Virginia Melanie Pagliaro said in the release. “She has created a movement that encourages healthier communities while bringing people together. We are thrilled to see their efforts recognized with this prestigious honor.”
As an elected county commissioner, the CCAWV says Tenney has demonstrated a strong commitment to improving the quality of life for Upshur County residents while serving as an advocate for community engagement, economic development and public health. They added that her work through the Mountaineer Mile initiative has showcased the power of volunteerism and collaboration to create meaningful change.
“CCAWV extends its sincere congratulations to Commissioner Tenney and all recipients and nominees of the 2026 Governor’s Service Awards,” The release stated. “Their service reflects the values that make West Virginia communities strong, resilient, and connected.”
