ELKINS – Elkins City Park will be buzzing with excitement when it hosts the 54th annual Augusta Festival and Craft Fair today.
The annual event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., has something for the entire family, including live music, arts and crafts, activities, workshops, storytelling, demonstrations, and the West Virginia Open Fiddle and Banjo contest.
“There are certain traditions that we are upholding from year to year, such as Appalachian vendors all with handmade items that really showcase the creativity of the area,” Augusta Festival coordinator Valarie Uccellani told The Inter-Mountain. “We will have over 40 craft vendors and also an array of food vendors who will be on hand who will be offering everything you could hope for.”
As in years past, the Open Fiddle and Banjo contest is expected to feature a host of talented musicians. Prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place in several different age groups. Registration for the contest will begin at 10 a.m. The banjo contest will start at 11 a.m. and the fiddle portion will begin at 12:15 p.m.
“Anyone who wants to enter the contest is encouraged to do so,” Uccellani said. “People don’t have to sign up in advance, they can just show up at the City Park’s main pavilion at any time starting at 10 a.m. It’s really fun to sit in and enjoy that contest, which always has veteran musicians who wow everyone.”
Many activities for children to take part in will be offered throughout the day. The Interact Children’s Museum will be attending the event and will have many hands-on activities for children.
“We are really happy that the Interact Children’s Museum will be hosting the hands-on activities for kids,” said Uccellani. “There will also be wonderful vendors who will have face painting and other things kids love.”
After the day concludes at the City Park, the celebration will continue at 7 p.m. when a Square Dance will be offered at the Augusta Dance Tent in the old Citizens Bank drive-thru parking lot. The dance will feature live music and local callers.
