Commission provides funding to local organizations
ELKINS — The Randolph County Commission approved a pair of funding requests to local organizations during its most recent meeting.
The first funding request on the agenda came from the Randolph County Fair. Chrissy Harper, a member of the fair’s board of directors, gave an information presentation to Commissioners David Kesling and Cris Siler.
“The Randolph County Fair really does provide an important service to our community,” Harper said. “Our fair mission is to promote, educate, and showcase Randolph County and our unique rural heritage. We have a very small group of very dedicated, hard working volunteers that really take that mission to heart…We showcase our youth and our livestock barn every year and it’s amazing the work the kids put into their animals all year long.”
Harper said that each year during the fair the community participates in produce, culinary and photography exhibits, as well as exhibits having to do with arts and crafts.
“We get a lot of people in the community involved and provide them with an opportunity to showcase their skills and hard work,” Harper said. “This year we are excited to be adding a lumberjack show, which also highlights our timber industry and heritage.”
In addition to the fair’s competitions, displays and contests, it also offers a variety of entertainment to those who make their way to 4-H Camp Pioneer.
“We enjoy being able to provide some entertainment to the community,” Harper said. “Our rodeo and truck and tractor pull always has a great attendance and those things will be back again this year.”
Commissioners approved the amount of $6,000 to the Randolph County Fair, which will be held on Aug. 9-15. Half of the amount approved came from budgeted money for the fair, while the other half was taken from the hotel-motel tax line in the county budget.
The County Commission also approved a $2,500 funding request to the Harman Fire Department for its annual Fourth of July celebration. The event featured a host of activities and a fireworks display. The money will be taken from the hotel-motel tax line item in the county budget.
“Since I’ve been on the County Commission we’ve always helped out with this event in Harman,” Kesling said. “We are happy to be able to help you out again with this year’s event.”
The next Randolph County Commission meeting will be July 15 at 1:30 p.m.
