Four killed in Barbour County fire
JUNIOR — Four people were killed in a mobile home fire likely caused by “consumer grade pyrotechnic materials” Wednesday evening, officials said.
According to a release put out Thursday afternoon by the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office, at 10:41 p.m. on Wednesday, Barbour County 911 received a call regarding a residential structure fire at 355 West River Avenue in Junior. There were reports that people were trapped in the residence by the fire.
“Firefighters arrived at the scene to find the front of the residence involved in fire,” the release states. “A search was conducted and four adults, two females and two males, were located and removed from the burning home unresponsive. All attempts at the resuscitation of the victims were unsuccessful.”
In a statement to The Inter-Mountain Thursday morning, Jason Baltic with the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office confirmed the deaths of four adults in the fire. According to the release, the victims were a 61-year-old male, a 27-year-old male, a 26-year-old female and a 23-year-old female. Officials have not released the victims’ names at this time.
West Virginia State Fire Marshal Investigators responded to the scene and began the investigation with the assistance of the West Virginia State Police, the release states. Investigators were able to determine that the fire originated on the front porch of the home and was likely caused by “used consumer grade pyrotechnic materials.”
“Remnants of used consumer grade pyrotechnic materials were located within the area where the fire originated,” the release states. “Further investigation revealed that the occupants of the residence had used the materials prior to the fire. Evidence indicates that the materials were most probably disposed of improperly into a waste bag with other refuge which ignited those items causing the fire. There were no working smoke alarms in the residence, and the victims were unable to escape as their egress was blocked by the fire.”
Barbour County Office of Emergency Management Deputy Director Dylan Harper also told The Inter-Mountain Thursday morning that fire departments from Belington, Philippi and Coalton responded to the fire, alongside the Junior Volunteer Fire Department. He stated that the Barbour County Sheriff’s Office, West Virginia State Police, Belington Police Department and the Barbour County EMS were also at the scene Wednesday night.
