Man charged after officers find gun in his possession

ELKINS -- A Randolph County man faces a felony gun charge after allegedly informing police and parole officers that he had a gun in his home.

Richard Logan Vest Jr., 30, is charged with one count of persons prohibited from possessing firearms, a felony. He is currently being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $15,000 cash-only bond, as well as a Parole Violators’ no bond.

According to the criminal complaint filed by Deputy and Task Force Officer D.A. Cale with the Barbour County Sheriff's Office and the Mountain Region Drug And Violent Crime Task Force, on May 11, Cale spoke with Vest after he was transported by West Virginia State Parole Officers to his residence on Central Street in Elkins.

Vest allegedly stated that he was in possession of a firearm inside a backpack in the residence, the complaint states. Cale obtained written consent from Vest and another resident to search the home. A search of the residence was conducted with West Virginia State Parole officers, and a pink HI-POINT .380 pistol was allegedly located in a backpack in the living room area.

West Virginia State Parole officers arrested Vest for parole violations and he was transported to the Tygart Valley Regional Jail, the complaint states. Vest was previously convicted of two counts of delivery of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) in 2023.
