HARMAN – The Harman Education Association has made two major announcements this week in preparation for its new Christian microschool scheduled to open in the former Harman K-12 School building this fall.
The new school will host its first day of classes on Sept. 8, officials announced, adding that Rev. Brad Spencer has been named the school’s administrator. Spencer brings 26 years of ministry experience to the school, including stints in missionary work, seminary teaching abroad, prison chaplaincy, and the public school system.
“We are delighted to announce that Brad Spencer will be the Harman School administrator,” HEA President Dan Bucher said in a press release. “This is a critically important role and we are fortunate to have Brad’s leadership.”
Spencer, who is currently the pastor of Canaan Valley Baptist Church and has been in that role since 2013, said he is thankful for the opportunity to lead the new Hamran School.
“I’m very excited to be part of the team that God has put together at Harman School,” Spencer said. “A lot of hard work has been done by the planning group and board, and I'm thankful to be called to join in this process.”
The former Harman K-12 School’s final day of classes -- and 89th high school commencement ceremony -- took place in May, with four seniors making up the 2026 graduating class.
A week after graduation, the school closed its doors for good at the conclusion of the school year. The Randolph County Board of Education voted to close the Harman school in October 2025, and the West Virginia Department of Education approved the action in December 2025.
On June 2, the Randolph County Board of Education voted to hand over the Harman K-12 building to the Harman Education Association. Two other entities, the Harman School and Advancement Center, and Urgent Care EMS Inc., also sought to gain control of the building. The building’s property disposition stated that in the event of a school closure, the facility must be used for educational purposes.
The Randolph County Board of Education voted unanimously to officially transfer the facility over to HEA at last week’s BOE meeting.
“We are grateful to the Randolph County School Board and Superintendent Dr. Derek Lambert for their gracious decision to transfer the property to house our school,” Spencer said. “Without their cooperation, the new Harman School would only be a dream, not a reality.”
