Pilot killed in Pocahontas County helicopter crash
POCAHONTAS COUNTY – A pilot was killed in a helicopter crash Friday morning in Huntersville, near Marlinton in Pocahontas County.
The incident happened at around 7:45 a.m. and is being investigated by both the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration, officials said.
The Sikorsky S-76D helicopter was owned by WACO Oil & Gas. The company has confirmed that the pilot, Leo Basile, 57, of Arthurdale, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Basile was apparently the only person on board the craft, according to reports.
Waco Oil & Gas owns multiple pieces of property in the Huntersville District of Pocahontas County, officials said.
“After the wreckage is documented, it will then be moved to a secure facility for further evaluation,” the NTSB wrote in a press release published online.
Further updates regarding the investigation will come from the NTSB, officials said.
