Stolen vehicle arrest made in Upshur County

BUCKHANNON – An Upshur County man received a felony charge after the Buckhannon detachment of the West Virginia State Police tracked down a reported stolen vehicle on Saturday.

Scottie Dale Hinchman, 47, has been charged with receiving or transferring a stolen vehicle. Hinchman is currently incarcerated in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail and has no bond.

According to a criminal complaint, officers responded to a 911 call on Saturday morning and were alerted that a stolen blue in color Dodge Caravan out of Lewis County was seen on the Brushy Fork Road in Buckhannon. Trooper Colton C. Jones of the Buckhannon Detachment of the WVSP observed the vehicle on Stoney Run Road and conducted a stop on the van at approximately 10:20 a.m.

According to the complaint, Weston Police Department Patrolman Kelley responded to the scene and advised that Hinchman had run into the woods after seeing him in the Shady Brook area approximately an hour prior to the vehicle being stolen.

According to the complaint, Kelley advised the vehicle was stolen from Mound Avenue in Weston at approximately 9:30 a.m. and that Hinchman was observed on camera looking through the passenger side window of the vehicle before getting into the driver’s side and driving off.

The complaint says that the owner of the vehicle heard the van start and called 911. The owner advised that the keys were left inside of the vehicle in the ignition. Upon retrieving the van, the owner advised that the rear view mirror and attached dash cam were removed and missing.

According to the complaint, Hinchman stated that someone had given him the keys to the vehicle and said he took the vehicle near Shop n’ Save in Weston.
