BUCKHANNON – Delegate, Adam Burkhammer, R-District 64, is warning notifying Upshur and Lewis county residents of confirmed reports about scammers targeting those affected by last week’s flooding.
It was reported that the scammers are using blocked or unknown phone numbers and "calling residents and claiming to represent insurance companies" and that "are requesting personal information and asking questions about flood damage and insurance claims," according to a social media post released by Burkhammer.
Upshur and Lewis county residents are urged to stay vigilant and aware regarding the vulnerability of the current situation and position they are in.
Burkhammer advises residents, "Do not provide personal, financial or insurance information to anyone who calls unexpectedly. If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately. If you need to speak with your insurance company, call the number on your insurance card or policy documents directly. Do not rely on a phone number provided by the caller."
There is also a rise in concern about false GoFundMe pages or other fundraising efforts appearing after a disaster such as the flood. Individuals interested in donating are suggested to "verify that any fundraiser is legitimate and created by the individual, family or organization it claims to represent. If you are unsure, do not donate until you can confirm its authenticity," Burkhammer said.
He also noted how scammers frequently take advantage of people during a difficult time and that it is important to remain attentive and informed. He encourages residents to share information with others and to report any suspected fraud to local law enforcement agencies. Burkhammer recommends that residents "rely only on trusted and official sources" for any information regarding resources in the aftermath of the flood.
Burkhammer is a Republican Delegate serving District 64, which includes sections of Upshur and Lewis counties. He is a native of Buckhannon and attended Buckhannon-Upshur High School. He is the Chair of the Human Services Committee and serves as part of the Government Organization, Health and Human Resources and Local Government Committees. Burkhammer is also a part of the Government Organization, Health and serves as Chair of the Children and Families Interim Committees.
