BUCKHANNON — The 11th annual Young Filmmakers Camp will take place at LASCAUX Micro-Theater this August, hosted by ART26201, with assistance from West Virginia Wesleyan College.

The five-day workshop will guide students through writing, shooting and editing a short film from Aug. 10 through Aug. 14. Taking place at the LASCAUX Micro-Theater in Traders Alley in Buckhannon, the camp is open to students ages 12 and up, and will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Snacks and bottled water will be provided and students will be asked to bring lunch daily.

“Led by instructors Andrew Carroll, Jon Benjamin, Will Stout, Jess Johnson and Bryce O’Loughlin, all students will learn the essentials of sharing a compelling story, screenwriting, videography and editing while working in a collaborative environment,” a ART26201 release states. “Additionally, students will be introduced to the vocabulary of film-making so that they can communicate about their work with others.”

At the end of the week, the camp will offer a screening of student-produced films so students can celebrate their accomplishments with their friends and families.

Students will be taught by local media experts who specialize in multiple categories of film and film-making.

Carroll is Chair of the English Department at Elkins High School, where he teaches journalism, digital media and AP English language and composition, the release states, adding that he is “an expert at using narrative nonfiction storytelling to teach students critical thinking and writing skills.” Outside of the classroom, Carroll has spent the past decade documenting old-time music and square dance across West Virginia.

Benjamin, according to the release, received a Master of Fine Arts degree in graphic design from the Rochester Institute of Technology and has been a professional graphic designer for more than 20 years. He has created several short documentaries and promotional films. Benjamin is Associate Professor of Graphic Design at West Virginia Wesleyan College. In addition to a number of art and graphic design classes, Benjamin teaches video production.

Stout is an actor and teacher originally from Elkins. He earned his BFA in Acting from West Virginia University, where he developed a strong foundation in performance before relocating to New York City to pursue acting professionally. Stout’s work quickly focused on television and film, and he has since appeared in a range of acclaimed productions, including “Blue Bloods,” “Marvel’s Daredevil,” “Partner Track” and “The Better Sister.” In addition to his acting career, Stout is a dedicated educator and coach. He works with both emerging and professional actors, offering guidance on everything from audition technique to onset performance. With a passion for storytelling and a keen eye for the technical demands of screen work, Stout helps actors build confidence, clarity and craft in front of the camera.

Johnson grew up in Summersville and now resides in Elkins, the release states. She has “a passion for working with young people and enjoys mentoring them as well as fostering their creativity.” Johnson led a teen program at Elkins-Randolph Public Library prior to the pandemic and “anxiously awaits” being a part of Young Filmmakers Camp every year.

O’Loughlin is a media producer and performer from Buckhannon, the release said. He graduated from Tulane University with a degree in film studies and digital media production. O’Loughlin has worked on large and small films and as an anchor/reporter for a West Virginia news station.
