BUCKHANNON - A contract has been awarded by the state Division of Highways for a $1.5 million paving project in Upshur County.
J.F. Allen Company was the low bidder on the project, set for WV 20, from Hinkleville to Buckhannon Road, with a bid of $1,525,386.32.
Meanwhile, in Pocahontas County, West Virginia Paving Inc. was the low bidder for paving on WV 84, from the Bird Run Bridge to the Virginia state line, with a bid of $754,210.
Another contract was approved for a guardrail installation project in several counties, including Barbour County.
Penn Line Inc. was the low bidder on the guardrail installation project in District 7, with a bid of $477,924.43. The work will take place in Barbour and also Braxton, Gilmer and Lewis counties.
Also in the North-Central West Virginia region, a project to pave US 50 from the junction of US 19 in Clarksburg to the junction of Interstate 79 near Bridgeport was among the 28 construction contracts awarded by the DOH.
Bear Contracting LLC was awarded a contract for $9,775,119.60 for the approximately 4.5-mile paving job, which includes milling, paving, guardrails and drainage construction and repairs.
The 28 contracts awarded by the DOH included 10 paving projects and nine bridge projects across the state.
Several factors are considered before awarding a bid, including whether a bid falls above or below the WVDOH Engineer's Estimate and by what percentage, a DOH release stated. In cases where a bid is above the Engineer's Estimate, WVDOH must consider the project need, repercussions of not awarding the project, additional funding sources, and whether sufficient reasons exist for the differences in estimates. Most projects are reviewed, analyzed, and awarded within a week of the bid letting, but the process can take longer.
When the Division of Highways has a project that is determined to be best constructed by a contractor, it is processed through the bid letting system, the release stated. A letting is a scheduled opportunity for contractors to review.
