Durbin awarded Local Economic Development Assistance Grant

DURBIN -- The town of Durbin was recently awarded a $5,000 Local Economic Development Assistance (LEDA) Grant that will help enhance the downtown experience for residents and visitors alike.
Delegate Jonathan Kyle, R-District 66, was able to secure the grant for the small Pocahontas County town after requesting assistance through Governor Patrick Morrisey’s Local Economic Development Assistance Program.
Kyle, who presented the grant to Durbin Mayor Kenny Lehman and town officials during Durbin Days earlier this month, said the project will encourage visitors to stop, ship, dine, and spend more time exploring the community.
“Good ideas often start at the local level," Kyle said. "My job is to help bring those ideas to Charleston and fight for the resources to make them happen. I'm proud we were able to secure this funding and continue investing in Durbin's future.”
The grant will be used to install free public Wi-Fi throughout Durbin’s Main Street business district and to purchase new bicycle racks that will accommodate the growing number of cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts who visit the community.
“One of the most rewarding parts of serving as a Delegate is helping connect our communities with resources that can make a real difference,” Kyle said. “Durbin has incredible businesses, beautiful scenery, and a thriving tourism economy. These improvements will make downtown even more welcoming for families, visitors, and those enjoying everything Pocahontas County has to offer.”
Durbin is one of West Virginia’s 12 Mon Forest Towns, which are gateway communities surrounding the Monongahela National Forest. Mon Forest Towns use their proximity to trailheads, rivers, and wilderness areas to support local outdoor recreation economies and tourism.
Durbin offers its residents and visitors an array of outdoor activities to enjoy, including hiking, biking, fishing, hunting, and more. A quality selection of restaurants and camping areas help make Durbin an attractive destination.
The Allegheny Trail is West Virginia’s longest hiking trail (311 miles) and Durbin is the closest to the center of the trail. Both hikers and mountain bikers can find dozens of trails around the town to enjoy. Those visiting the town can also take a ride on the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad.
The Local Economic Development Assistance Program provides grants for projects that strengthen economies, improve community amenities, and support tourism across the Mountain State.
