Elkins pulls past Lincoln in opener

Bulldogs falter on the road

ELKINS – Seth Robinson ran for 331 yards and scored four touchdowns as Elkins pulled past Lincoln for a 40-27 win Friday night in both teams’ season opener at Tiger Stadium.

After a scoreless first quarter of play, the Cougars (0-1) jumped out to a 7-0 lead with 7:24 remaining in the second quarter when Conner Rice scampered in the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown.

The Tigers (1-0) answered back on their ensuing drive when Tony Silvester, who finished the game with 71 yards on the ground, broke free for a 29-yard touchdown with 2:38 remaining in the opening half.

After forcing Lincoln to punt on its next drive, Silvester hit pay-dirt again for the Tigers, this time on a 39-yard run that gave the hosts a 14-7 advantage with 1:11 to play in the half.

The Cougars answered just before intermission and tied the contest at 14 when Jacob Bart threw a short touchdown pass to Colton Edwards with under one second remaining.

Elkins reclaimed the lead late in the third quarter when Robinson capped off a 4-play, 45-yard drive with a 9-yard touchdown at the 3:52 mark.

Lincoln answered right back as Rice’s 1-yard touchdown run with 2:41 left in the third quarter tied the game at 21. Rice had another run of 63 yards on the drive to help set up the score.

The Tigers answered back and went in front 28-21 when Robinson scored his second touchdown of the game on a 5-yard run with 8:50 remaining in the contest. The 11-play, 64-yard scoring drive consumed close to six minutes of the game clock.

Robinson scored his third touchdown of the game with just under seven minutes remaining to push Elkins’ lead to 34-21.

Robinson scored his fourth and final rushing touchdown of the game when he rumbled in for a 28-yard touchdown to make it 40-21 with 3:45 left to play.

Edwards hauled in a 25-yard touchdown reception late in regulation for Lincoln to cap off the scoring in the contest.

The Tigers will travel to Moorefield next Friday for their next contest. The Cougars will entertain South Harrison the same evening.

Valley 20, Tygarts Valley 8

PINE GROVE – Koleton Kinkade rushed for over 100 yards to help lead Valley to a 20-8 victory over Tygarts Valley Friday night in both teams’ season opening contest.

The Lumberjacks (1-0) led 6-0 after one quarter of play and pushed the deficit to 12-0 at the half after Kinkade scored a 3-yard touchdown just before halftime intermission.

Both teams found the end zone in the second half and were able to convert on two-point conversion attempts.

The Bulldogs (0-1) will entertain Tucker County next Friday. Both teams will be searching for their first win of the season after the Mountain Lions dropped a 31-16 decision to Pocahontas County in their season opener.
