ELKINS -- A Randolph County Schools bus caught on fire today while traveling to Grant County, but no students were injured, officials said.

The Randolph County school system’s transportation director, Nick Alfred, told The Inter-Mountain that the Elkins High School volleyball team was traveling to Moorefield today when the brakes on the bus got hot, and then caught fire.

Alfred said the bus driver put out the fire with the fire extinguisher carried on the bus. He said the local fire department also came to the scene to make sure everyone was safe.

A Grant County school bus brought the players and coaches back to Randolph County, Alfred said.

A Randolph County Board of Education social media post at about 6:15 p.m. stated the following:

“While traveling to Moorefield today, one of our buses experienced a brake fire. Everyone was safely evacuated. We want to let our families and community know that all students and staff are safe.

“A special thank you to Grant County Schools for stepping in and loaning us a bus so our students and staff could be transported safely. We truly appreciate our neighboring school system lending a helping hand when we needed it.

“Thank you to everyone who helped keep our students and staff safe today.”
