ELKINS – The Randolph County Board of Education unanimously approved real estate and personal property auction agreements with Kaufman Realty and Auctions for the sale of the former North Elementary School during Tuesday evening’s meeting at the Central Office.
Randolph County Schools Superintendent Dr. Derek Lambert recommended the approval of the contract with Kaufman as part of an agenda item during the minutes, agreements, and contracts portion of the meeting.
It was the second consecutive BOE meeting in which a request for an agreement with Kaufman was part of the agenda. During the previous meeting on Aug. 18, the Board went into executive session to discuss the item and no action was taken.
BOE members returned to executive session Tuesday evening to discuss the agreement again, but this time when they came back into the public meeting they voted 5-0 to approve the request.
The agreement with Kaufman is for the North Elementary School properties and excess property owned by Randolph County Schools. According to documents provided as part of the agreement, the auction will be an Online Only Auction and the start date is to be determined.
At the end of the last school year, North Elementary School closed its doors for good after the West Virginia Department of Education voted unanimously to accept Randolph County Schools’ recommendation to close the school.
The state’s decision, which was made during a meeting in December of last year, came after the Randolph Board of Education voted 5-0 to close North Elementary in October 2025.
North Elementary, which is located in the Highland Park area of Randolph County, officially opened its doors in the fall of 1976. For 50 years the school not only welcomed students from the Highland Park area, but also the Kerens and Montrose communities as well.
Students who attended North Elementary School last year and didn’t move up to Elkins Middle School this fall, now attend grade school at Jennings Randolph Elementary School.
Also during the minutes, agreements, and contracts portions of Tuesday evening’s meeting, the BOE approved Lambert’s recommendation to offer Dual Credit courses from Marshall University at Elkins High School, Pickens School, and Tygarts Valley High School, and approval of a contract for an SAT Math Preparation Course being taught by Brian Moudry through I’m Ready ACT Prep.
The next Randolph County Board of Education meeting will be Sept. 15 at 5:30 p.m.
