ELKINS – The Randolph County Commission approved funding requests for a pair of local organizations during its most recent meeting.
The first request on the meeting’s agenda came from the Tygart Valley Homestead Association, which was seeking funding help for the Homestead Community and Event Center.
“Just to fill you in on some things that have been going on up at Homestead, we have fresh paint in the dining hall and new blinds installed, and youth football and cheer have holding practices and games out on the field as well as youth soccer,” said Tygart Valley Homestead Association President Thomas Rennix.
“We had a big party for the kids with inflatables a couple weeks ago, and the Rosie the Riveter group is going to be having their displays in our building. They have a lot of pictures, literature and information on all of the ladies in the area who Rosie the Riveters back during World War II. So we are going to have a special place for all of that and it will be open to the public.”
Rennix said that during the winter months, youth basketball will be using the facilities’ gymnasium on a daily basis, and added that the building’s biggest expense during that time of the year is the gas bill, which runs around $1,400 per month.
“We have to have the heat on for the basketball teams,” Rennix said. “The gas bill is pretty tough during that time. So we’ve sent out donor letters to all the local businesses for some help and we have not gotten much response yet. But hopefully that will improve… We are working hard to keep the building open and our programs working. Any help you could give us would be appreciated.”
The County Commission unanimously approved $5,000 in funding to the Homestead Association. The money will be taken from the hotel-motel tax line item in the county budget.
The second funding request on the agenda came from Autumn on the Dryfork, which will be held on Oct. 12.
Rex Vance, president of the Dryfork Recreation Center, spoke about the upcoming event.
“We’ve always got support from you all for the Autumn on the Dryfork event and we appreciate your support,” Vance told the commissioners. “We always have a good time at the event. We have apple butter, apple cider, pork, and chicken being made during the event.”
Commissioner Cris Siler said, “You guys always do a good job with the event and I always have a good time whenever I can make it over there. Every time we have given you money, you’ve done great with what we have given you.”
The County Commission unanimously approved the funding amount of $2,500 to this year’s Autumn on the Dryfork. The money will be taken from the hote-motel tax line item in the county budget.
The next Randolph County Commission meeting will be Oct. 1 at 1:30 p.m.
