Day of Action

United Way projects deemed successful

ELKINS – More than 260 volunteers took part in 40 local projects during the annual Tygart Valley United Way Day of Action.   

The event, which takes place each year during the month of September, is a volunteer project designed to foster service and volunteering in the TVUW’s five-county region, which includes Randolph, Tucker, Barbour, Taylor and Marion counties.   

“Day of Action is one of the clearest examples of what makes our community special," said Brett White, CEO of Tygart Valley United Way. "Today, hundreds of volunteers rolled up their sleeves to make a difference, from painting and cleaning to planting and packing.

“Their time, energy and heart bring our mission to life. Together, we are proving that unity is the way we build stronger communities… Our volunteers, partners and donors are the lifeblood of United Way, and we could not be any more grateful to them for the work that's being done in our region ”   

Participants from companies and organizations spent the day of Sept. 11 helping local non-profit agencies that included Catholic Charities West Virginia, Centers Against Violence, Barbour County Heart and Hand House Inc., Interact Children’s Museum, Kump Education Center, Randolph County Family Resource Network, Randolph County Humane Society, Refinery Church, Tucker Community Foundation, and West Virginia Caring Hospice Care Randolph County.

“As we can see with the turnout for Day of Action, our citizens truly care about their communities,” said TVUW Regional Engagement Director JoLynn Powers. “This is especially important for the United Way, as we recently delivered hygiene supplies to all the schools across the Tygart Valley through the generosity of our community and the help of our Day of Action Volunteers.”   

During the organization’s Hygiene Drive, hygiene and other personal care items were collected between June and August, and were recently distributed to all 47 schools in Tygart Valley United Way’s five counties.   

In 2026, the Tygart Valley United Way raised a total of $541,500 during its annual community fundraising campaign. The amount raised is 90% of its fundraising goal, making this the first time in 20 years that the agency hasn’t met its community goal.
