ELKINS -- The Davis & Elkins College Sport Management Master's Program will welcome sports analytics expert Dr. Joe Sill as a guest speaker Thursday, Oct. 8, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in Senate Commons inside Myles Center for the Arts.

The session is free and open to the College community and the public.

"We are excited to welcome Dr. Joe Sill to Davis & Elkins College as part of our Sport Management Master's Program," Program Director Dr. Mary Ann DeLuca said. "His work in sports analytics and his extensive experience with the Washington Wizards organization provide an extraordinary opportunity for our students and community members to learn from a leader who has shaped data analytics in professional sports."

“I’m excited to visit Davis & Elkins and talk about what I did during my 16 years as an NBA data scientist [as well as] how to go about getting a job in professional sports,” said Sill.

Sill served as a data science and machine learning consultant for the Washington Wizards from 2010 through 2026. In the nearly full-time role, he held primary responsibility for the NBA team's automated proprietary analytics for most of his tenure.

In 2010, Sill received a best paper award at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference for his research on regularized adjusted plus/minus, commonly known as RAPM. The statistical method continues to influence analytics within the basketball and hockey communities.

Sill also co-authored an award-winning paper presented at RecSys 2011, a computer science conference focused on recommender systems. He was the largest shareholder on the team that finished second in the Netflix Prize, a data science competition that attracted thousands of teams competing for a $1 million award.

Sill earned a doctorate in computation and neural systems from the California Institute of Technology and a bachelor's degree with a double major in applied mathematics and philosophy from Yale University, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa.
