ELKINS – Mountain State Forest Festival week will bring changes to trash collection, City Hall hours, traffic, and parking. The regularly scheduled Oct. 1 meeting of Elkins City Council has been canceled.
Trash collection will operate on its regular schedule Monday, Sept. 28, through Thursday, Oct. 1.
Customers whose regular collection day is Friday will instead have their trash collected beginning at 6 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1. Friday-route customers should have their trash out by 6 a.m. Thursday.
City offices will be closed Friday, Oct. 2, for the Mountain State Forest Festival.
The regularly scheduled Elkins City Council meeting Thursday, Oct. 1, has been canceled. Council’s next regular meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 15.
Forest Festival activities will also affect traffic and parking throughout the week. Third Street, part of Davis Avenue, and part of Railroad Avenue will be closed beginning today for carnival setup and will remain closed through the following weekend. Additional temporary street closures and traffic changes will occur during Festival week.
The Firemen’s Parade begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2. The Antique and Classic Cars Parade, Log Truck & Equipment Parade, and Grand Feature Parade follow one another beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3. Both days’ parades travel up Davis Avenue from 12th Street, across Fifth Street, and down Randolph Avenue past the Randolph County Courthouse.
There will be no parking along this route for either parade; ensure vehicles are moved one hour before start time to avoid being towed. People attending the parades are encouraged to arrive early, park outside the affected area, and walk to the parade route. Drivers should avoid unnecessary travel through downtown during parade staging and the parades themselves.
The City will provide reminders about Forest Festival street closures, parking restrictions, and other changes as they approach. Residents can learn more about receiving City alerts at https://cityofelkinswv.gov/alert-center.
