Firefighters battle weekend blaze in Barbour

PHILIPPI - Firefighters battled a blaze at a family residence in Barbour County for hours over the weekend.
The fire was reported at about 2:58 p.m., according to information shared by the Nutter Fort Fire Department, whose Engine 71 responded along with the Stonewood and Bridgeport fire departments to assist the Philippi and Belington VFDs.
The blaze took place at a "single-family dwelling" on Elk Creek Road, near Overfield Road in Barbour. Firefighters arrived at the scene to find the structure "heavily involved," according to the Nutter Fort FD.
No injuries were reported, although the Barbour County Ambulance Authority was on the scene for standby purposes.
Engine 71, staffed with three personnel, arrived on the scene in under three minutes, officials said, just behind Philippi Engine 41. The Nutter Fort crew used a nearby hydrant for water supply and provided manpower for fire suppression.
"Units placed multiple hand lines in service with an interior attack being attempted through the rear before going defensive due to structural integrity," the release states. "Engines 511, 122, 35, and Unit 125 all provided additional manpower."
Engine 71 returned to the Nutter Fort FD at 5 p.m., after helping with overhaul and clean-up of the scene, officials said.
