ELKINS - Elkins and much of the surrounding areas are currently under a flood watch, which is in effect through this morning.
The flood watch affects portions of Randolph, Barbour, Upshur and Pocahontas counties.
According to the National Weather Service, flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible in the watch area.
"Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone locations," the flood watch states.
"Slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms will periodically move through the area through Wednesday morning. Areas which have previously received heavy rain will be most vulnerable to additional flooding."
The flood watch area includes the cities of Elkins, Harman, Philippi, Belington, Buckhannon, Marlinton and Snowshoe.
The National Weather Service forecast for the Elkins area calls for rain today, with thunderstorms possible after 2 p.m. Patchy fog is expected before 10 a.m. The high temperature is predicted to be near 64, with a 60% chance of precipitation.
More rain is predicted for tonight, but on Thursday the forecast is predicting partly sunny skies, with a high temperature near 66.
The forecast keeps getting brighter through the rest of the week, with Friday expected to be a sunny day with a high near 67.
Saturday and Sunday are both predicted to have sunny skies as well, with a high of 66 on Saturday and a high of 67 Sunday.
