MARLINTON - A new fundraising initiative has been created to support the needs of Pocahontas County’s people and organizations.
The Pocahontas Community Fund has been launched this year, looking to provide unrestricted grant funding to organizations throughout the county, allowing any nonprofit or charitable organization to apply, regardless of mission.
This approach is designed so that funds will go where they are most needed, granting local residents the ability to identify opportunities and challenges within their communities. A local committee of Pocahontas County residents will oversee grant distribution, reinforcing a grassroots approach to philanthropy.
The new initiative is an outgrowth of the Tucker Community Foundation, which was established in 1985 in direct response to that year’s devastating flood. Over time, the Foundation has significantly broadened its outreach, expanding its services since 1989 to cover nine counties in West Virginia and one in Maryland. In 2002, Pocahontas County was added to the Foundation’s service area.
"Our collaboration with the people of Pocahontas County represents a profound commitment to local leadership and vision," said David Cooper, CEO of the Tucker Community Foundation. "By working together, we are not only addressing immediate needs but also establishing a framework for sustainable support that will benefit generations to come."
The launch of the Pocahontas Community Fund was the first annual Pocahontas Community Fund Classic, held at The Raven Golf Club at Snowshoe on July 17.
The event raised $5,000, matched by a $5,000 contribution from the Tucker Community Foundation, totaling $10,000 to seed the Pocahontas Community Fund.
"We invite all residents of Pocahontas County to participate in our fundraising efforts and help us expand the impact of the Pocahontas Community Fund, as all contributions will positively impact Pocahontas County directly," Angie Pase, Development Director for the Foundation, added. "Every contribution makes a difference and fosters lasting change in our Tucker Community community."
Going forward, to ensure ongoing support for the Pocahontas Community Fund, the Tucker Community Foundation and the Pocahontas Community Fund Committee will host the annual Pocahontas Community Fund Classic golf tournament, providing an important fundraising opportunity and also celebrating community spirit by encouraging residents and supporters to engage in local philanthropy.
Other fundraising initiatives, such as the Tucker Community Foundation’s annual 5K run/2K walk called Run For It, will enhance the community's ability to contribute to this vital cause.
"In our effort to create sustained impact, we are working to establish an endowed, unrestricted fund dedicated solely to the communities within Pocahontas County," Cooper said. "This means that every contribution will directly benefit the people who live and work in this region. Donors can have confidence that their support will be used wisely to create lasting change, empower our communities, and improve the overall quality of life for everyone in Pocahontas County."
