MT. LIBERTY – The 41st annual Mount Liberty Fall Festival will take place Saturday at the Mountain Liberty Community Building.
The festival will begin at 11 a.m. and will conclude with a cakewalk that is set to get underway at 6 p.m.
The Community Building is located on the Jonestown-Mt. Liberty Road between the towns of Philippi and Belington.
“This is our 41st annual Fall Festival, but we have been here and operated for 43 years,” festival president Sherry Booth told The Inter-Mountain. “We were down for two years with the COVID.”
For more than four decades the festival has been one of the main sources of funding for the community building, which also serves as a community shelter in times of need, through the Barbour County Office of Emergency Management.
“We have three major fundraisers throughout the year,” Booth said. “We have our Ramp Dinner on the last Saturday in April. And we have people come from all over for the Ramp Dinner, out-of-state, it doesn’t matter, they come to eat the ramps.
“The other major fundraiser is our apple butter sale. It is well-known in the area and it takes place during the Fall Festival. We actually make a turn of it (apple butter) during the festival over an open fire with an old copper kettle. We are well-known for our apple butter and we have some customers that buy it by the case.”
Along with serving up its famous apple butter, the festival will also offer free entertainment, kids activities, a silent auction, and food and craft vendors.
“We will have live entertainment all day and will have our cake walk to finish out the evening,” Booth said. “We usually have around 45 cakes for the cakewalk, and a lot of people come to the festival just for it. But then we have others that come for the entire day with us.”
The event will begin with the opening ceremonies, which will include a prayer from Danny Wagner, a flag-raising by American Legion Post 33, and the National Anthem, performed by Joyful Noise.
Vendors and kids activities will run from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. The first musical performer, John Bolton, will take the stage at 11:30 a.m. The Masons will play at 1 p.m. and Steve Smith at 2 p.m.
There will be a “meet your candidate” session at 3 p.m., before Susanne Mallow and Joyful Noise round out the musical performances at 3:30 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. Silent auction winners will be announced at 5:15 p.m.
