ELKINS – The annual American Legion H.W. Daniels Veterans Day Dinner is scheduled to take place on Nov. 14 at the Post 29 headquarters on Railroad Avenue.
Veterans attending the dinner eat for free, while the public is also invited to take part in the event and honor veterans. There will be a fee for non-veterans attending and tickets are limited.
“Every veteran who comes to the dinner eats for free,” American Legion Post 29 Adjutant Mike Cardinal told The Inter-Mountain. “The Sons of the American Legion donates $500 to pay for all of the veterans to eat.”
Doors will open at 6 p.m. for social hour and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. in Calain Hall. The menu will consist of turkey, mixed vegetables, mashed potatoes, gravy, drinks and a dessert.
“This is a good event that we host every year and it’s a chance for us to see a lot of people we haven’t seen in a while,” Cardinal said. “We always hand out some awards during the dinner and give everyone a quick update on what’s going on with the American Legion. But it’s always nice to talk with some friends we have seen in a long time and share some stories.”
Major James Clevenger, of the National Guard, will be the guest speaker at the event. Boy Scout Troop 166 will receive awards during the dinner and will render colors and honors.
“I plan for close to 100 people to show up every year,” Cardinal said. “That includes the guests, the speaker, and everyone else who shows up. Typically we get around 80 people for dinner and that’s comfortable, because it’s not crowded and we always have plenty of room for everyone to move around. But we seem to have a good showing every year.”
Members from American Legion Post 29 will also be on hand for a Rosie the Riveter tulip ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday at the All-Veterans Memorial Park on Railroad Avenue.
During the Rosie the Riveter ceremony, which is scheduled for 11 a.m., Post 29 members will render honors and will present a flag to a representative from the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Washington. D.C.
