Buckhannon Trunk or Treat event to return

By Taylor McKinnie 3 min read

BUCKHANNON – TThe annual Trunk or Treat hosted by the Upshur County Family Resource Network, the Buckhannon City Police Department and Volunteers In Police Service will return on Monday, Oct. 26 at the Public Safety Complex in Buckhannon.

The event will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The public will not be allowed to enter the Trunk or Treat area until 6:30 p.m., but the Upshur County Family Resource Network ensures participants that the trunks will stay open until the last family goes through. Line-up will take place around the safety complex. Officials say the event saw almost 500 kids last year.

The three organizations are still looking for “trunks” to participate, with sign-ups for the event ending on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. Officials say they cannot take any sign-ups after that time as they will be working on the map. The organizations state they can only take personal vehicles or smaller trucks; however, if you have a larger vehicle, please contact the Upshur County Family Resource Network at upshurfrn@yahoo.com, so officials can see if they can accommodate the size request.

It is asked that all participating vehicles please adhere to the map officials will make.

“We take a great deal of time to create the map after we receive the information,” officials said in the announcement of the return of their Trunk or Treat. “When you arrive, a VIPS or UCFRN person will direct you to your spot. If there is any confusion, please flag us down. We are happy to help!”

There will be spaces between everyone to set up, but it is also asked that participating vehicles please design their decorations so they do not go outside of the allotted space. It is also requested that no vehicles are set-up outside of the perimeter as to keep children from running across the street.

The set-up for Trunk or Treat will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 26. It is asked that participating vehicles please do not come prior to that time. According to officials, during last year’s set up, the organizations were still getting emergency vehicles and emergency personnel vehicles in place when people started arriving early, causing a traffic line.

“We want everyone to have a great and safe time, and we promise that the families will not be allowed into the area until 6:30 p.m.,” officials said. “We keep that promise to you all, so you do have an entire hour to set-up and make your spot look great.”

In the event of bad weather, the Upshur County Family Resource Network’s Facebook account will post any weather or event updates on its Trunk or Treat event page at noon and 4 p.m. on Oct. 26.
