By Brad Johnson 2 min read

BUCKHANNON - The deadline for federal disaster assistance for residents impacted by the July 21 deadly flooding has been extended.

Governor Patrick Morrisey’s request for a two-week extension of the application deadline was approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The new deadline to apply for federal disaster assistance is Oct. 17.

"West Virginians impacted by these floods have been through a lot, and we want to make sure everyone eligible has the opportunity to get the help they need," Morrisey said in a press release.

"I thank FEMA for approving our request and giving families additional time to apply as we continue working with these communities through the recovery process."

Individuals and families in Upshur, Lewis, Pleasants and Ritchie counties who were affected by the July flooding may be eligible for federal disaster assistance.

Residents can apply online at DisasterAssistance.gov, through the FEMA App, by calling the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362, or by visiting a Disaster Recovery Center. The FEMA Helpline provides assistance in multiple languages.

Disaster Recovery Centers in Lewis and Upshur counties will remain open through Oct. 17 to provide in-person assistance. Centers are open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Upshur County Development Authority and the former Summit Center in Weston.
