Moore secures $1.5M for Corridor H improvements

WASHINGTON, D.C. - A total of $1.5 million has been secured by Congressman Riley Moore for sewer improvements and expansion along Corridor H.

Moore, R- 2nd District, said he earmarked the Community Project Funding through his work on the House Appropriations Committee.

"I'm proud to have secured $1.5 million for the City of Weston to make these critical sewer improvements and extend service along Corridor H.," Moore said. "This investment will unlock the economic development potential of Corridor H to create good-paying jobs across Central West Virginia.

"I will continue working through the House Appropriations Committee to make sure West Virginia communities have the infrastructure they need to compete, grow, and create jobs."

Moore said the funding will help the City of Weston and its Sanitary Board make significant upgrades to its existing sewer system, including improvements to lift stations, while working to extend sewer service to areas along Corridor H between Weston and Buckhannon.

"The area along Route 33 and Corridor H has significant potential for economic growth and development, but the lack of available sewer infrastructure has limited the ability to attract new businesses and development," a press release from Moore’s office reads. "Several economic development opportunities have been lost because sewer service was unavailable.

"As Corridor H continues to open new opportunities for West Virginia communities, reliable utility infrastructure will be critical to ensuring Lewis County is prepared for future residential, commercial and industrial growth."

As of last month, approximately 112 miles of Corridor H are open to traffic, with the latest section being opened June 22, from Kerens to Parsons.

The Corridor H project began in 1965 as part of the Appalachian Regional Development Act, which was passed to initiate economic growth in the rural areas of Appalachia. The original plan detailed a four-lane highway that runs from Weston to Strasburg, Virginia, where it meets Virginia Route 55.

In December 1999, Corridor H was divided into nine projects, from the city of Elkins to the Virginia state line. Last month’s opening of the Kerens to Parsons segment leaves only two sections that remain unopened and approximately 20 miles left to be completed. The two remaining unopened segments are from Parsons to Davis and Wardensville to the Virginia border.
