BEVERLY -- For Brian Safian, his wife, Taylor Safian, and their 10-year-old son, Mason, Mountain Mama Cheesesteak Co. is much more than a place to grab a delicious cheesesteak. It's a symbol of perseverance, second chances, family and the courage to start over.
Originally from Delaware, the family made the decision to relocate to the mountains of West Virginia after Brian Safian's longtime employer closed its doors following 10 years of working there. What could have been viewed as a devastating setback instead became an opportunity to pursue a dream the family had shared for years -- building a new life in the Mountain State.
That dream eventually became Mountain Mama Cheesesteak Co., a family-owned business bringing a taste of the East Coast to West Virginia through authentic cheesesteaks, refreshing water ice, and homemade baked goods.
With more than 20 years of experience in the food service and hospitality industry, Brian Safian has dedicated much of his professional life to preparing quality food, serving customers, and creating welcoming experiences. Opening Mountain Mama Cheesesteak Co. gave him the opportunity to put that experience to work while building something meaningful alongside his family.
However, the journey to becoming small-business owners has not been without obstacles.
Like many new businesses, Mountain Mama Cheesesteak Co. faced challenges early on, including an unexpected relocation that forced the family to adapt and push forward. Despite those setbacks, the Safians remained committed to their vision.
Today, the family is excited to establish its home at 59 S. Hazelwood Road in Beverly, where they look forward to growing their business and becoming an even greater part of the surrounding community.
But behind the cheesesteaks and homemade treats is an even more powerful story -- one of recovery, resilience and rebuilding a life centered on what matters most.
Brian and Taylor Safian are both in long-term recovery, with more than 20 years of combined sobriety. Their journey has helped shape the values behind their business, including hard work, gratitude, determination and the importance of family.
For the Safians, opening Mountain Mama Cheesesteak Co. represents more than achieving the dream of business ownership. It represents the life they have worked hard to build together and the future they hope to create for their son.
Their 10-year-old son, Mason, is at the heart of that journey. Homeschooled by his parents, Mason is an important part of the family's everyday life and the inspiration behind much of what they do. The family takes pride in building a business that allows them to spend time together while teaching the importance of perseverance, responsibility, and following one's dreams.
Although Mountain Mama Cheesesteak Co. remains a small, family-run operation, the Safians have big hopes for its future.
They are especially grateful for the kindness, encouragement, and support they have received from the West Virginia community since making the mountains their home. Their story is a reminder that sometimes life's unexpected challenges can lead to new opportunities, and that with determination, family, and the willingness to keep moving forward, a difficult chapter can become the beginning of something extraordinary.
For the family, Mountain Mama Cheesesteak Co. isn't simply about serving great food. It's about creating a welcoming place where customers feel like family, sharing a little piece of their Delaware roots, and giving back to the community that has embraced them.
One cheesesteak at a time, the Safian family is proving that second chances can lead to something special.
