ELKINS - A local artist has unveiled a new work from her "Department of Daydreams," and she’s named it "Patchwork Sky."

Nevada Tribble recently installed the new public art piece, a colorful handmade canopy, outside the Delmonte Market and Crossing Coffee Bar at 316 Railroad Avenue.

"It's woven and crocheted with colorful paracord and deep-sea fishing line, so it will be durable outside for years to come," Tribble said. "I hope viewers will take a moment to look up and notice the sky through the open patches in the art piece."

The piece is part of Tribble's "Department of Daydreams" series of immersive public art experiences in downtown Elkins. The series began with temporary installations, but now features two permanent locations which are free and open to the public, including "Frost," located inside Double Knee Vintage at 214 Davis Avenue.

The project began with a grant from the West Virginia Department of Tourism, with the Elkins-Randolph County Tourism Convention and Visitor Bureau serving as a fiscal agent for the application.

"We're so excited to see yet another original piece of public art just blocks away from other recent installations, like the murals inside the Railyard Event & Conference Center and the canoe kiosk on Railroad Avenue, which all create even more ways to experience the arts in Randolph County," said Ben Duvall-Irwin, marketing director with Elkins-Randolph County Tourism.

Tribble is an interdisciplinary fiber artist from Elkins who is "inspired by seasonality and patterns in nature," according to her website. Her work is "a sensory experience of color and texture, often featuring layered combinations of weaving, sewing, and handmade paper. Her wall art and wearables are designed to bring the peace and joy of the forest into our everyday surroundings."

This art project was supported with financial assistance from: the West Virginia Department of Tourism and the National Endowment for the Arts, with approval of the West Virginia Commission on the Arts; the Vibrant Elkins committee; Davis Trust Company; and the Tucker Community Foundation.
