Philippi Elementary placed on ‘safety hold’ due to ‘student behavior issue’

PHILIPPI – Philippi Elementary School was placed on a “safety hold” due to a “student behavior issue” on Friday morning, officials said.

A Barbour County Schools announcement on social media Friday stated that “the situation has been addressed, and all is clear at this time.”

“Thank you for your patience and understanding as we prioritize the safety and well-being of our students and staff… Safety is always our priority,” the announcement stated.

No further information about Thursday’s incident has been released.

Earlier this week, students from Philippi Elementary School were evacuated Monday morning due to what was originally believed to be smoke in the school. The issue turned out to be a furnace that was causing a burning smell. Students were evacuated as a precaution and windows were opened to ventilate the building.

Barbour County Superintendent of Schools Eddie Vincent commended the Philippi Fire Department and the Barbour County Sheriff's Office for doing a "great job" Monday eliminating any situation that "could have gotten worse."

"I think the school did a great job getting kids out," Vincent said. "We didn't know what the situation was, but once we pinpointed where it was, we fixed it and it was back to normal."
