The Rotary Club of Elkins has gifted a West Virginia Word Search Puzzle Book to every eighth-grade student in Randolph County.

The Rotary Club has a long history of supporting Randolph County students with the gift of books. Beginning in 2004, a dictionary was given to every fifth-grade student. Then, in 2010, the project transitioned to atlases. This year, it was decided to make a shift to the word search books to supplement the eighth-grade West Virginia History curriculum.

"I'm excited our club has provided a supplement the West Virginia History curriculum. These books contain themed puzzles that will mesh nicely with various lessons," said Rotary President Karen Wilmoth.

Word search puzzles provide great benefits for the students. They improve pattern recognition, visual tracking and spelling while building vocabulary as well as focus and attention. They also provide stress relieve, and sense of accomplishment and a screen-free break from tech overstimulation.

This project was wholly supported by Rotary District 7545, the Elkins Rotary Club and its members. Citizens Bank of West Virginia, Davis Trust Company and Mountain Valley Bank, corporate members of the Rotary club, along with President Karen Wilmoth and her husband Bob provided approximately one-half of the funds necessary for this project. The remaining funds came from a Rotary District 7545 $1,000.00 matching grant and the club's year-round fundraising efforts.

"I am so very thankful that our club has such generous members who value education and are willing to help provide the extras that our students are lacking due to funding constraints. My sincere thanks go to Nathaniel (Bonnell), Hoy (Ferguson) and Doug (Vance) for helping make this project a reality," concluded Wilmoth.
