Randolph man facing felony charge

ELKINS – A Randolph County man faces a felony charge after allegedly shoplifting from a local gas station.

Joshua Runner, 44, is charged with one count of shoplifting third offense, a felony. Runner was being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $1,000 personal recognizance bond that has since been posted.

According to the criminal complaint, filed by Corporal R.A. Summerfield with the Elkins Police Department, on Sept. 21, Summerfield was dispatched in reference to alleged shoplifting at the Speedway gas station on Harrison Avenue in Elkins.

Upon arrival, Summerfield spoke with the Speedway’s manager, the complaint states. The manager said a male subject, identified as Runner, had entered the gas station on Sept. 19 and proceeded to walk up to the cold deli case. Runner allegedly removed a mini cheesecake from the cold deli case before walking around the store. He then stopped at the hot sandwich case, where he allegedly took a sandwich and placed it on the rack in the back isle.

Reportedly, when Runner realized he was being watched, he waited a few minutes and then came back for the sandwich, the complaint states. Runner also allegedly went down the cooler isle and took a Gatorade. All items taken were allegedly put in Runner’s hoodie pocket and the total value of the items stole was $10.53, accordign to the complaint.

Summerfield was provided a video of the incident that reportedly corroborated what the manager advised, the complaint states.

Upon a look into Runner’s criminal history, Summerfield determined that Runner had previous convictions for shoplifting from March 22 and from January 2023, according to the complaint.
