BELINGTON – A Barbour County man faces a felony charge after police allegedly stopped him from an attempted sexual assault.

David Lee Sharp, 66, of Belington, is charged with one count of second degree attempted sexual assault, a felony. He is currently being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $100,000 surety/cash bond.

According to the criminal complaint, filed by Deputy Aaron Gould with the Barbour County Sheriff’s Office, on Wednesday, Gould responded to a 911 dispatch call regarding a domestic assault at a residence on Samaritan Circle in Belington.

Upon arrival, Gould and Corporal Parks headed toward the front door, the complaint states. Parks said he heard a scream coming from inside the residence, and upon entry, both officers heard a woman scream “help” from a room. Parks opened the door to the room and both officers allegedly observed Sharp, naked, standing behind the alleged victim.

Sharp was placed in hand restraints and taken out of the residence, the complaint states. Parks asked the alleged victim what happened and she reportedly stated that she told Sharp “no” and that she did not want to have sex. Parks asked how many times the alleged victim told Sharp “no.” She advised it was multiple times and that she had recordings of the incident on her cell phone.

According to the complaint, the alleged victim could be heard on recordings repeatedly telling Sharp “no” and crying. She told police that when she would try to get up, Sharp allegedly would push her back onto the bed. The alleged victim said she tried to get a baseball bat to protect herself, but was unsuccessful.

Park read Sharp his Miranda Rights, which Sharp waived, the complaint states. Parks asked Sharp if he heard the alleged victim tell him “no.” Sharp allegedly said he did. Parks then asked Sharp, “Do you think you should have stopped when she was saying no?” Sharp allegedly said he should have stopped when the alleged victim said no.
